Oral Hygiene

You’ve heard it countless times: maintaining great oral hygiene is extremely important. Dentists and orthodontists tell it to their patients at every appointment, to ensure that they take proactive steps to keep their teeth clean by brushing and flossing daily. Whether you have braces, Invisalign clear aligners, or other orthodontic appliances, the team at Elko Dental Specialists wants to remind you to prevent the formation of plaque and cavities by keeping your gums and teeth clean. Below you’ll find three products you can use to keep your wires, brackets, and entire mouth in tip-top shape throughout treatment.

Interdental Toothbrush

A Proxabrush is perfect for children and adults with braces, as it allows patients to easily access those difficult areas underneath your wires. You should use an interdental toothbrush to clean between your wires and around your brackets before brushing, to remove small food particles that get lodged in your braces. They’re small enough to store in any backpack, purse, or briefcase, so you can protect your teeth wherever you go.

Antibacterial Mouthwash

It’s take your mouth and gums a bit of time to get used to your new appliances. Peroxyl, a hydrogen peroxide antiseptic mouth rinse, can help reduce the irritation and risk for infection that may develop from your braces. All you have to do is rinse your mouth with two teaspoons of Peroxyl (half a capful) for one minute and then spit it out. You can use it based on your schedule, whether it’s early in the morning or late at night, to help your mouth recover from the initial discomfort. It’s most commonly used for canker sores, cheek bites, and minor cuts on and around the gums. Ask your orthodontist to recommend an antiseptic rinse for you.

Topical Fluoride

Just like the fluoride treatment you receive at the dentist, Dr. Gardner and Dr. Sorenson can recommend an at-home supplemental fluoride to strengthen your teeth during orthodontic treatment. Phos-Flur should be used at night before bedtime, by applying it to a toothbrush and brushing for one minute. Then, you spit it out and wait at least 20 minutes, so it has time to work its way into the teeth.

Other Helpful Oral Hygiene Tips

Making simple adjustments in your everyday routine can also make the orthodontic journey much smoother. Other general tips to maintain a healthy mouth during treatment include:

  • Cutting down or eliminating foods that are high in sugar, like soda, candy, and ice cream
  • Avoiding snacks and candy that are sticky
  • Visiting your dentist at least twice a year for routine checkups and cleaning
  • Following your orthodontist's instructions throughout treatment, and asking questions if needed
